Miami, Fla. | “T-Breds Run Through Gators”
Florida Man Sports is back with more Week 9 coverage of South Florida high school football! Tonight we had a matchup between the Barbara Goleman Gators and the Hialeah Thoroughbreds. Hialeah is coming in hot, at 6-2, with 4 straight wins, and in each of those wins they have scored at least 49 points and won by at least 30 points. Their last 3 victories have come by a margin of at least 50 points. Goleman is coming off of two tough losses after a 4-1 start, and were coming into this one looking to bounce back in a huge GMAC contest.
The Gators controlled the clock early, with an over 9-minute drive to kick off the game. The focus was on the running game without the services of 2027 QB Kingston Rust. 2027 QB Timothy Potts took the reins for this game. 2025 TE Matthew Negron and 2025 RB Kyjuan Taylor were grinding out tough yards early and often. But eventually that T-Breds defense came alive. 2027 DT Noah Bell, 2025 DB Laron Davis, 2027 MLB Andre Fletcher Jr., and 2027 DE Ke’Shaun Boyd were all pushing the rushing attack back. And after a penalty called back a Goleman touchdown, 2025 DB Terrell Williams had an impressive interception to halt the Gators attack.
Right away, the Hialeah offense was ready to go. After 2028 LB Keny Belamour Jr. forced a punt, the T-Breds had a gutsy fake deep in their own territory in which Davis ran past multiple confused defenders and got the ball over the 50. 2025 QB Byron Reese showed an improved control over the offense tonight, beginning with a first-down connection with 2025 WR Karon Jean-Charles, and then a touchdown connection with a wide open 2025 WR Jevon Davis.
Boyd and 2026 DE Terrell Evans were dominating the Goleman offensive line, with tackles for losses and batted balls galore. Reese was spreading the wealth to all of his weapons, as Jean-Charles and Davis each had another first down, and the signal caller got 2026 WR Keandre Bernard involved as well. 2027 RB Ryan Mathis got his legs churning for a first down of his own and then Reese found Bernard in the endzone for his second touchdown of the game to extend the lead to 13-0.
The first half was quick, and with the weather rainy and windy, the second half was draining, especially for the Gators. Reese continued to slice and dice through the defense, with first-down completions to Bernard and 2025 ATH Elie Tamir. Mathis was gaining more confidence with each carry. Despite some good defensive plays by 2027 DB Isaac Pena (PBU) and 2027 DL Rah’Saan Williams (TFL), Reese eventually found his 3rd different receiver for a touchdown, this time Jean-Charles.
Goleman just couldn’t get much going on the offensive end of the ball. Now with Potts out of his comfort zone and forced to throw, he delivered a couple of first-down completions to 2026 WR Julian Prieto and 2026 TE Adrian Morales. But Davis (Laron) and 2026 DB Alex Preston snuffed out the drive and nothing came out of it. Milking some clock at this point, why not continue what was gaining momentum at this point: the ground game. Mathis had another first down run, followed by a dump-off between Reese and Mathis that put the T-Breds on the goal-line again. And the coaching staff rewarded Mathis by getting him a touchdown to extend the lead to an insurmountable 25 points.
Defense continued to dominate in the later stages of the game. Evans forced a fumble. 2026 DB Giovonni Morley popped a ball out of a receiver’s hand that ended up in the waiting arms of Boyd. 2028 ATH Britain Mitchell had a late pass breakup. And Preston had an incredible interception as time expired. Reese and 2025 WR Damarcus Anderson connected on a 4th quarter touchdown to finish the game at a 31-0 tally.
Just an extremely impressive performance by Hialeah on both sides of the ball, as they win their
fifth straight game and now sit at 7-2 on the season. Reese was diverse with his receivers and got everyone involved. Perhaps the most important number, 0 interceptions. Mathis, Bernard, and Jean-Charles all impressed tonight. The defense once again flexed their muscles as well. Evans, Boyd, Davis, Preston, and others were all over the field tonight and continued the rise of this program. The T-Breds were a joy to watch tonight, and truly were not Gator bait. They will finish the regular season against Miami Springs next Thursday night.
I’m not sure what happened with the Goleman Gators tonight. It was seemingly a 180-flip from the last time we saw them up against Cypress Bay. Perhaps Rust makes that much of a difference? Taylor couldn’t get much going on the ground tonight as the centerpiece of the offense. Where was 2026 ATH and Florida State commit Darryl “Tre” Bell? He wasn’t on the field enough tonight enough on offense. Potts wasn’t great tonight, but as a youngster, he has a lot of room to keep growing. They still sit at 4-4, and can turn this 3-game losing streak around with a couple of wins to finish off the season. They certainly have a winnable one against Taravella next Wednesday to get back on track.
FINAL SCORE:
Hialeah beats Barbara Goleman 31-0
