Miami, Fla. | “Vikings Steer Past Patriots”
Florida Man Sports is back with Week 8 coverage of South Florida high school football. Tonight we had a big time showdown between the American Heritage Patriots and the Norland Vikings. This game was originally scheduled to take place this past Saturday, before weather had its way and postponed the game to Monday. Heritage is coming off of a blowout shutout victory against Plantation two weeks ago, while Norland, at 5-1, had a comfortable 33-14 road victory up in Cocoa last weekend.
The Vikings got the rock first and they came out guns blazing. 2025 QB Ennio Yapoor was locked in and firing early, delivering first-down strikes to 2025 ATH Terrence Honeywood, 2025 WR Ronald Towns, and 2026 WR Dawson Quarterman. But the opening drive was stalled after a key stop made by 2026 DE Kymani Morales and a combined sack by 2026 LB Dylan Bennett and 2026 DE Issac Tanis.
When the Patriots got the ball off of a turnover-on-downs, 2026 QB and Texas commit Dia Bell threw a bomb to 2025 WR Malachi Toney. Bell showed off his dual threat ability with a 1st down scramble. Then, 2025 RB and FSU commit Byron Louis broke through a hole and dashed to the endzone to give Heritage the early 7-0 lead.
Heritage was controlling the game for a while, as Bell was making plays with both his legs and his arm. He delivered another first-down toss to 2026 WR Jamar Denson. But the Norland defense eventually came to life. The defensive line started a monstrous tear, as 2025 DE Michael Smith and 2025 DL Mandrell Desir combined for a tackle for loss, and then 2025 DL Darryll Desir had a sack that forced a punt. 2025 LB Anthony Ottinot changed the momentum with a huge blocked punt.
With the advantageous field position, Yapoor then hit 2026 RB Maurice Clark on a screen pass to get the Vikings on the goal-line. Yapoor then sneaked in for a touchdown. Norland went for a 2-point conversion, but Yapoor was sacked by Morales. Louis, on the next drive, chewed through the Norland defense for three first-down gallops. But Desir (Mandrell) had a tackle for loss that forced Heritage to settle for three.
After a roughing the punter call on 4th down against the Patriots, the Vikes got a drive going. Yapoor delivered a strike down the middle to 2025 ATH and FAU commit Jade Card for a first down, followed by a first-down run by 2025 RB Omar Jefferies. Bennett and 2026 DT Cory Simon had back-to-back sacks that had Norland looking at a 4th & 18 in the second quarter. Yapoor was forced out of the pocket with pressure, holding onto the ball for what seemed like forever, and launched a prayer across his body, somehow finding Jefferies wide open at the front of the endzone. Jefferies walked it in to give Norland a 13-10 lead. An absolutely incredible play by Yapoor.
Norland got the ball back with a couple minutes left in the first half and Yapoor got his legs going. He ran for a first down, followed by a strike to Honeywood to get Norland back on the goal-line once again. Yapoor then sneaked it in again to give the Vikings a double-digit lead at the half.
As the second half kicked off, on the first play of scrimmage, Heritage handed the ball of to Louis, and he got through another hole and booked a trip for 6 once again. 68 yards to swing that momentum right back to the Patriots. Heritage’s defense stepped up as well. 2025 S Jordan Louis and 2025 DL and NC State commit Omarian Abraham made plays. Tanis had a sack, and another combined with Simon. After Bell connected with 2026 WR Brandon Bennett for a first down and Louis ran for another first down, 2025 K/P Gavin Harvey tied the game at 20.
In the 4th quarter, Yapoor was back to making plays. He found Honeywood for another first down. And there was an unsportsmanlike penalty that put the Vikings right back on the goal-line. Yapoor once again snuck into the endzone to give Norland the lead back. But there was a blocked PAT that kept the Norland lead at 6.
When Bell got the ball back, he made an incredible play. Falling down but somehow keeping his balance, Bell found a hole and then made a mad dash to the endzone to give Heritage the lead back. Another absolutely incredible play in this game.
With just under 3 minutes left, Norland had their chance to take this game and finally finish it. Yapoor was grinding. He rumbled for three first downs with his legs. Honeywood also chimed in with a first-down run of his own. After 2025 DB Mekhi Hicks and 2026 DE Rodarion Tellez had a combined tackle for loss, Yapoor found Card in the back of the endzone on a play in which Card bobbled and then hauled in the ball to give Norland a 5-point lead with 24 seconds left.
After some pressure by Desir (Darryll), Heritage tried some laterals and it was kiboshed, giving Norland the win in an incredible affair.
Norland moves to 6-1 after this incredible win. Yapoor was composed for the majority of the game, despite the fact that he was pressured on so many occasions. Clark and Jefferies gave Yapoor a great complement on the ground. Honeywood and Card showed out on the boundary. That defense, specifically down in the trenches, is fantastic. The Desir twins were monsters for a large portion of the night. This team is in prime position to make another deep playoff run. They will show off against Central in a huge game this Friday.
Heritage drops to 3-4 on the season after this brutal loss. Bell is an absolutely fantastic player and showed off his 5-star pedigree. A true dual-threat. Louis is also incredible. He showed incredible vision, and was fast as heck all night long. He is a star on the ground and was undoubtedly the best player on the field this game. The Heritage defense was also impressive, with Bennett and Tanis leading the charge and keeping the Norland offense at arm’s length. This team still has a lot left in them and are certainly not done yet. The Patriots will face off against Archbishop McCarthy this Friday at home.
FINAL SCORE:
Miami Norland beats American Heritage (Plantation) 32-27
